DraftSight · Lesson 5: 3D modeling
Primitives, extrude, revolve, sweep, loft, Boolean operations, edge fillets, slice, 3D pattern and meshes.

1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶3D Modeling Tools in DraftSightBox, cylinder, sphere, torus, then extrude, revolve, sweep and loft from sketches.↗
Video 2▶3D Solid Editing Tools in DraftSightUnion and subtract, edge fillets and chamfers, slice, mirror and 3D pattern.↗
Video 3▶3D Meshing Tools in DraftSightMesh primitives, 3D faces, edge mesh and point-by-point mesh.↗
2. Key takeaways
Primitives (box, cylinder, sphere) give you a quick base; extrude and revolve start from a 2D profile.
Boolean operations combine solids: union to join, subtract to drill or hollow out.
Slice splits a solid in two along a plane, useful for a half part or a section view.
A mesh is for freeform shapes: each point can be moved, but the result is not a solid in the strict sense.
Tip
Reuse the constrained profile from lesson 4 as the base for an extrusion: you keep the benefit of the constraints before moving to 3D.
3. Do the exercise
Model a drilled angle bracket:
- extrude the L-shaped profile from lesson 4 by 40 mm
- subtract two cylinders to create the mounting holes
- add a fillet on the inner edge and slice it through the middle
