How does SOLIDWORKS Design open your files ?

With SOLIDWORKS Design, data is stored on the 3DEXPERIENCE cloud, but a local copy is used for day‑to‑day work.

When working on SOLIDWORKS Design, opening a file looks easy. In reality, SOLIDWORKS uses both the cloud and your computer to work efficiently.

-> Where does the data come from ?

-> Why is it faster after the first opening?

Here is a simple explanation.

You are not opening only a regular file

With SOLIDWORKS Design, your file is stored on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, not only on your computer :

  • The file in stored in a Common Space.
  • Several people can access it.
  • Versions are saved automatically.

However, SOLIDWORKS does not work all the time directly from the cloud.

First opening : download from the cloud

The first time you open a file from 3DEXPERIENCE, SOLIDWORKS :

  • Connects to 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
  • Download the needed data.
  • Builds the model on your computer.

If the assembly or the part is complex, this step can take some time.

Faster next time : local cache

After the file is opened, SOLIDWORKS keeps a local copy on your computer. This is called the local cache.

    From then on:

    • The file does not need to be downloaded again.
    • Opening the part/assembly is much faster.
    • SOLIDWORKS always uses the local copy first.
    • This makes the software faster and smoother to use.

    Work with multiple users

With 3DEXPERIENCE, several users can work on the same part :

    • Each user works on their own local copy
    • Changes are sent back to the platform
    • New versions are created automatically

    Warning

The combination of local cache and cloud versioning is powerful, but it can also lead to misunderstandings between what the platform sees and what SOLIDWORKS remembers. You can fin a procedure to follow to Resolve local cache conflicts.
