Advanced modeling · Lesson 4: Multibody parts: the methods
Model negative space, work around a fillet problem, prepare casting tooling and edit imported geometry.
Lesson goal
Apply multibody techniques to real cases: manifold block, impossible fillets, tooling and imported parts.

1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Multibodies: Modeling Negative SpaceModel the inside of a hydraulic manifold, then subtract it from the outer body.In French↗
Video 2▶Using Multibodies to Solve a Filleting ProblemSeparate features into bodies, add the fillets, then recombine. In French↗
Video 3▶Multibodies: Modeling for Rapid ToolingDesign the core and pattern of a housing, then save them as parts. In French↗
Video 4▶Move/Delete FaceEdit imported geometry with no history by moving or deleting faces. In French↗
2. Key takeaways
When internal passages matter most, model them as solids, then subtract them with Combine.
Edges that are too close prevent a fillet: add the fillets on separate bodies, then combine.
The casting core and pattern can be created in the same part, then saved as separate parts.
Move Face and Delete Face edit an imported part without remodeling it.
Tip
For a drilled block, keep the negative space body in the part but hidden: it is used to check the passage cross-sections.
3. Do the exercise
Model a 60 × 60 × 40 mm drilled block:
- model two intersecting Ø 10 mm channels as a separate body
- subtract this body from the block with Combine
- enlarge a channel by offsetting its cylindrical face with Move Face
