Mold Tools · Lesson 4: Create the tooling
Tooling split, interlock surfaces, side cores, mold assembly and the cavity method.
Lesson goal
Get the core, the cavity and the side cores, then assemble them and show the mold in an exploded view.

1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Mold Design: Tooling SplitCut the block, create the interlock surfaces, save the bodies and assemble the mold.↗
Video 2▶Side CoresCreate a drafted side core from sketches and freeze features.↗
Video 3▶Creating a CavityAssembly method: insert the part between two blocks and create the cavity with shrinkage.↗
2. Key takeaways
Tooling Split cuts a sketched block into core and cavity from the prepared surfaces.
Interlock surfaces around the parting surface align the two mold halves when the mold closes.
A Side Core releases an undercut; the Freeze bar avoids rebuilding the upstream features.
The Cavity feature in an assembly is a simpler method for blocks without a complex parting line, shrinkage included.
Tip
Save the core, cavity and side cores as separate parts, then assemble them: the drawing and exploded view of the mold work like any other assembly.
3. Do the exercise
Finish the mold for the part from the previous lessons:
- create the tooling split with interlock surfaces
- add a side core on the undercut found in lesson 1
- save the bodies and create the mold assembly in an exploded view
