Lesson goal
Convert an imported part into a parametric SOLIDWORKS model you can edit through its dimensions.

1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶FeatureWorks: Automatic Recognition ModeRepair with Import Diagnostics, then recognize features automatically.↗
Video 2▶FeatureWorks: Interactive Recognition ModeChoose the features to recognize, including those the automatic mode does not handle.↗
Video 3▶FeatureWorks: Volume Features and EditingRecognize unusual geometry as a volume, then replace it with a standard feature.↗
2. Key takeaways
Always run Import Diagnostics before FeatureWorks: repaired geometry is easier to recognize.
Automatic mode handles common cases; interactive mode lets you choose the type and faces.
A volume feature captures what does not match any standard type, and can be replaced later.
Recognized features can then be edited like native SOLIDWORKS features.
Tip
Do not try to recognize everything: convert only the features you need to modify, the rest can stay an imported body.
3. Do the exercise
On a STEP file of a prismatic part:
- run Import Diagnostics
- recognize the extrusions and holes in automatic mode
- recognize a remaining hole in interactive mode
