1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶SOLIDWORKS PDM Weldments BOMs and Weldment Cut ListsHow PDM displays the different BOM types in Windows Explorer.↗
Video 2▶SOLIDWORKS PDM: Working with Named BOMs, BOM Versions and Comparing BOMsCreate a named BOM from the computed BOM, edit it, check it in and compare it.↗
2. Key takeaways
The Computed BOM can be read directly from the Bill of Materials tab, without opening SOLIDWORKS.
Weldments have their own display: weldment BOM and weldment cut list.
A Named BOM starts from the computed BOM; you can edit and add rows, then check it in like a file.
The comparison shows the differences between the named BOM and the original computed BOM.
Tip
Use a named BOM to add what the CAD does not contain (adhesive, paint, packaging) without touching the model.
3. Do the exercise
In a test vault, on a checked-in assembly:
- display its computed BOM in Windows Explorer
- create a named BOM and add a “packaging” row
- check it in, then compare it with the computed BOM
