Lesson goal

1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

The Simulation Suite of ProductsVideo 1▶The Simulation Suite of ProductsTour of the modules: structural, flow, plastics, sustainable design.↗ The Analysis ProcessVideo 2▶The Analysis ProcessThe Simulation interface and setting up a study on a simple part, from setup to results.↗ Mesh Convergence and Mesh ControlsVideo 3▶Mesh Convergence and Mesh ControlsMeasure the effect of element size and refine the mesh where it matters.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

A study always follows the same order: material, fixtures, loads, mesh, run, results.

2

Stress peaks at sharp corners increase with each refinement: they are singularities, not results.

3

Convergence is checked by refining the mesh until the result you need barely changes.

4

A local Mesh Control refines the critical area without making the whole model heavier.

Tip

Add a small, realistic fillet to the sharp corners of the area you are studying: the stress becomes measurable instead of climbing indefinitely.

3. Do the exercise

Take the bracket from lesson 1 into Simulation:

  • run the study with the default mesh
  • refine the bend area twice with a Mesh Control
  • compare the maximum stress of the three runs
✓To check: The difference between the last two meshes should be a few percent. Otherwise, refine further or look for a singularity.
