Static Simulation · Lesson 5: Optimize and focus the analysis
Dimension optimization under constraints and submodeling of a critical area.
Lesson goal
Make the analysis work for you: lighten a part while meeting the constraints, and study one area in detail without recalculating the whole assembly.

1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶The Optimization ProcessVary dimensions to reduce mass while meeting stress and displacement constraints.↗
Video 2▶SubmodelingRecalculate a part of a large assembly with a fine mesh, based on the global results.↗
2. Key takeaways
An optimization study combines variables (dimensions), constraints (max stress, displacement) and a goal (minimum mass).
Limit the number of variables and their ranges: each combination is a full analysis.
Submodeling takes the displacements of the global model at the boundaries of an area, to recalculate it in detail.
Tip
Run the optimization first with a coarse mesh to find the right region, then check the chosen solution with a fine mesh.
3. Do the exercise
On the bracket from the previous lessons:
- use the thickness and the bend radius as variables
- require a factor of safety of at least 2
- look for the minimum mass
