1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

Sheet Metal CutsVideo 1▶Sheet Metal CutsRemove material normal to the sheet, including across bends.↗ Closed CornersVideo 2▶Closed CornersExtend two adjacent flanges to close the corner, with the gap or overlap you want.↗ Forming Tools for Sheet Metal PartsVideo 3▶Forming Tools for Sheet Metal PartsAdd embosses, louvers and ribs from the library, and create your own tools.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

For a clean cut, select the Normal cut option: the cut stays perpendicular to the material, even on a curved face.

2

To cut across a bend, Unfold, cut flat, then Fold: the cut follows the bend.

3

The Closed Corner extends the flanges to reduce the gap between two adjacent flanges: set the gap according to the process (welding, bending).

4

Forming tools are dragged from the Design Library; you choose whether they appear in the flat pattern.

Tip

Create your own forming tools for your shop's standard shapes (embosses, cable grommets): you can then place them with a single drag and drop.

3. Do the exercise

On the cover from lesson 2:

  • make a 30 × 10 mm slot cut straddling a bend
  • close the two front corners with a 0.5 mm gap
  • add a louver on the top face
✓To check: The cut appears whole and in the right place in the flat pattern.
