1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

2. Key takeaways

1

A part can contain several sheet metal bodies, each with its own thickness and flat pattern.

2

In a weldment, the added sheet metal bodies appear in the cut list alongside the structural members.

3

Convert to Sheet Metal: you select a fixed face and the bend edges, SOLIDWORKS creates the bends and the flat pattern.

Tip

For a STEP part sent by a customer or a supplier, converting to sheet metal saves you from remodeling it: you get a flat pattern in a few minutes.

3. Do the exercise

Start from a solid enclosure:

  • create a 150 × 100 × 60 mm hollow box, 1.5 mm walls, no lid
  • convert it to sheet metal, selecting the bottom as the fixed face
  • check the flat pattern
✓To check: The four walls unfold around the bottom, with no overlap at the corners.
