1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

2. Key takeaways

1

The limit mate gives real travel: a cylinder between its retracted and extended positions.

2

The width mate centers a part in a slot, even if dimensions change.

3

Mechanical mates (gear, rack and pinion, screw) transmit motion from one component to another.

4

These mates also let you check for collisions over the full travel of the mechanism.

Tip

Combine a limit mate with collision detection while moving the component: you see right away if the mechanism catches at the end of travel.

3. Do the exercise

On a rack and pinion mechanism:

  • mate the pinion to rotate about its axis
  • add a rack and pinion mate
  • limit the rack travel to 100 mm
✓To check: Rotating the pinion moves the rack, which stops at 100 mm.
