Prerequisite: Lessons 1 to 5
1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Working With Large AssembliesWhat defines a large assembly and what slows it down when opening.↗
Video 2▶Assembly ModesResolved, Lightweight and Large Design Review: compare the three modes.↗
Video 3▶Assembly TechniquesModeling techniques that reduce open and rebuild times.↗
Video 4▶Large Assembly Settings and TipsGlobal and local options for faster assemblies.↗
Video 5▶SpeedPakSimplify a subassembly without losing its useful references.↗
Video 6▶Large Design ReviewOpen a huge assembly very quickly to review and measure it.↗
Video 7▶Assembly EnvelopesSelect, hide or suppress components based on an envelope.↗
2. Key takeaways
Mates and external references weigh more than the number of parts: reduce them first.
Lightweight mode loads only the essentials; Large Design Review opens in seconds for review.
A SpeedPak replaces a subassembly with only its useful faces in the parent assembly.
Rigid, well structured subassemblies rebuild much faster than a flat assembly.
Tip
Use the assembly Performance Evaluation tool: it identifies the components and mates that cost the most time.
3. Do the exercise
On your largest assembly:
- open it in Large Design Review, then in Lightweight mode
- run Performance Evaluation
- create a SpeedPak for the heaviest subassembly
