1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

2. Key takeaways

1

The basic mesh divides the computational domain; the initial mesh refines it according to the geometry before the calculation.

2

In automatic mode, the global refinement level and the Minimum Gap Size drive most of the result.

3

In manual mode, control planes and local meshes concentrate cells where the flow matters.

4

Always display the mesh on a cut plot before running a long calculation.

Tip

Check the Minimum Gap Size whenever you change the project settings: in a narrow passage, it often decides whether the passage is meshed correctly.

3. Do the exercise

On the project from lesson 3:

  • display the mesh on a cut plot with the default automatic setting
  • increase the global refinement level and compare the number of cells
  • add a local mesh on the narrowest area and run the calculation again
✓To check: The pressure drop changes little between the last two meshes: the result no longer depends on the mesh.
