1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

Preparing Flow SimulationVideo 1▶Preparing Flow SimulationDefine the project with the Wizard, set boundary conditions and goals, and mesh.↗ Running and Postprocessing a Flow Simulation ProjectVideo 2▶Running and Postprocessing a Flow Simulation ProjectMonitor the calculation in the Solver window, then use cut plots, surface plots, trajectories and 2D graphs.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

The Wizard sets the project framework: units, analysis type, fluid, initial conditions.

2

Boundary conditions describe what flows in and out; goals are the values the solver monitors.

3

During the calculation, the Solver window shows how the goals evolve: this is where you judge convergence.

4

In post-processing, combine cut plots, surface plots, flow trajectories and 2D graphs for a complete picture.

Tip

Define a goal for each quantity you need to justify (pressure drop, flow rate, maximum velocity): you find them directly in the solver and in the results.

3. Do the exercise

Take the watertight model from lesson 2:

  • create a project with the Wizard for an internal water flow
  • set a flow rate at the inlet, a pressure at the outlet and a goal on the pressure drop
  • run the calculation, then plot a velocity cut plot and a 2D pressure graph along a sketch
✓To check: The pressure drop goal stabilizes in the Solver window, and the velocity cut plot is consistent with the cross-sections of the model.
