1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

SOLIDWORKS MBD Technique SummaryVideo 1▶SOLIDWORKS MBD Technique SummaryMethods for drafted parts, sheet metal and weldment structures.↗ DimXpert for AssembliesVideo 2▶DimXpert for AssembliesDimension and tolerance overall dimensions and mounting interfaces in the assembly.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

On a drafted part, dimension between faces by suppressing the draft or by using intersection geometry.

2

In sheet metal, a dedicated configuration holds the flat pattern, and reference dimensions tie in the bend lines.

3

In weldments, the cut list is used to display the dimensions of structural members, supplemented by 3D notes.

4

In an assembly, DimXpert defines overall dimensions and mounting hole spacing, with the same tools as in a part.

Tip

For an assembly delivered to a customer or an integrator, limit PMI to envelope and interface dimensions: that is what they need to install it.

3. Do the exercise

On a small weldment or sheet metal subassembly:

  • create the configuration or the cut list required for the case
  • dimension two members using the method from the video
  • in the assembly, dimension the mounting hole spacing with the automatic scheme
✓To check: The dimensions stay correct after a change to the part, and the mounting hole spacing appears in the assembly's PMI.
