MBD and 3D dimensioning · Lesson 3: PMI tools and annotation views

Reference dimensions, datum targets, 3D notes, surface finish, weld symbols, then organization with annotation views.

Lesson goal

1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

3D PMI ToolsVideo 1▶3D PMI ToolsReference dimensions, datum targets, notes, tolerance styles, surface finish and weld symbols.↗ Annotation ViewsVideo 2▶Annotation ViewsDynamic, orthogonal or custom annotation views, and multiple viewports.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

You can reuse feature dimensions or add reference dimensions rather than entering everything again.

2

Default notes are placed from the Design Library; a saved tolerance style can be reused on other parts.

3

Annotation views sort PMI by viewing direction; an annotation can be reassigned to another view.

4

Viewports show the model from several angles at the same time.

Tip

Save your general notes (general tolerances, treatment, deburring) in the Design Library: they drop onto each new part with a single drag and drop.

3. Do the exercise

Go back to the plate from lesson 1:

  • add a 3D note for general tolerances and a surface finish
  • create a custom annotation view for the back face
  • reassign two annotations to this new view
✓To check: When you switch annotation views, each annotation appears in only one view, readable with no overlap.
