Weldments · Lesson 1: Your first frame
Skeleton sketch, structural members and the profile library.
Lesson goal
Build a first frame from profiles based on a skeleton sketch, and choose or create the profiles you need.

Prerequisite: Able to create 2D and 3D sketches
1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Introduction to WeldmentsCreate a frame from construction sketches and standard profiles.↗
Video 2▶Weldment ProfilesUnderstand, add and create profiles (tubes, angles, I-beams, etc.).↗
2. Key takeaways
A weldment starts from a skeleton sketch (2D or 3D): each segment becomes the centerline of a profile.
The Structural Member sweeps a profile along the selected segments; one member can group several segments.
Profiles are library files: standards, types and sizes are stored in folders, and you can create your own.
The whole structure remains a single multibody part: each profile is a body.
Tip
Build the skeleton sketch with global driving dimensions (length, width, height): the whole frame resizes when you change three values.
3. Do the exercise
Create a workbench in 40 × 40 × 3 square tube:
- 1,200 × 600 mm top frame
- four 850 mm legs
- a lower crossbar on both long sides
