1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Trimming Complex WeldmentsShorten, extend and treat corners with Trim/Extend.↗
Video 2▶Welded Pipes and TubesCreate tube members from a sketch and trim the joints.↗
2. Key takeaways
The Structural Member corner treatments (End Miter, End Butt1 or End Butt2) handle simple joints.
Trim/Extend cuts a profile against another profile or a face, for joints the corner treatments cannot handle.
The weld gap is set in the corner treatment or in the trim.
The creation order of members decides which one runs through at intersections.
Tip
If two profiles still overlap after trimming, check the cut option (simple cut or coped cut): it is often what leaves extra material.
3. Do the exercise
On the workbench from lesson 1:
- switch the top frame corners to End Miter
- trim the legs so they stop under the top frame
- leave a 1 mm weld gap
