Prerequisite: Lessons 1 and 2
1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Extruded Boss and Extruded CutAdd material, remove it, and the extrusion options. In French↗
Video 2▶Design Intent: End ConditionsBlind, Through All, Mid Plane, Up To Next, Up To Surface, etc., and how they differ. In French↗
Video 3▶RevolvesRotate a profile around an axis to add or remove material. In French↗
Video 4▶PlanesCreate planes in any orientation from existing geometry. In French↗
Video 5▶Points, Axes, and Coordinate SystemsThe reference geometry that helps you build and measure. In French↗
2. Key takeaways
Blind sets a depth; Through All and Up To Next follow the geometry if the thickness changes.
Choose the end condition based on intent: a through hole must stay a through hole when the plate gets thicker.
A revolve requires a profile on one side of the axis only; a construction line can serve as the axis.
A reference plane is useful when no planar face exists where you need to sketch.
Tip
For a symmetrical part, extrude with Mid Plane from an origin plane: symmetry is guaranteed every time the thickness changes.
3. Do the exercise
Model a stepped shaft and its flange:
- create the shaft by revolving a profile with three diameters
- create a plane offset 20 mm from an end face
- add a Through All cut on the flange
