1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

Linear PatternVideo 1▶Linear PatternRepeat in one or two directions, skip instances, vary the parameters. In French↗ Circular PatternVideo 2▶Circular PatternRepeat around an axis, a circular edge or a cylindrical face.In French↗ Mirror PatternVideo 3▶Mirror PatternCopy features or bodies about a plane, with the geometry pattern option. In French↗ Other PatternsVideo 4▶Other PatternsSketch driven, table driven and curve driven patterns, and fill patterns. In French↗

2. Key takeaways

1

Pattern a feature rather than redrawing it: a single change updates all instances.

2

Instances to skip remove copies without breaking the pattern.

3

A mirror keeps the part symmetrical by design, even after the original feature is edited.

4

When the layout is neither linear nor circular, a sketch driven or table driven pattern follows your points or coordinates.

Tip

Preferably pattern the base feature, not its fillets: include the fillets in the pattern or add them afterward.

3. Do the exercise

On a 200 × 100 mm plate:

  • create a 4 × 2 grid of holes with a linear pattern and skip one instance
  • add a round flange with 6 holes in a circular pattern
  • place 5 holes at arbitrary positions with a sketch driven pattern
✓To check: Change the diameter of the original hole: all instances follow.
