1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶PDM Standard ComponentsThe role of SQL Server Express, the database server, the archive server and the three client types.↗
Video 2▶Install PDM StandardInstall SQL Server Express, Management Studio, the PDM servers and the CAD Editor client.↗
Video 3▶Create PDM Vault and Client Local ViewCreate and configure a PDM Standard vault, then the local view on a client workstation.↗
2. Key takeaways
PDM Standard relies on Microsoft SQL Server Express, the PDM database server and the PDM archive server.
The archive server stores the files, the SQL database stores the metadata: both are required.
Installation order matters: SQL Server Express and Management Studio first, then the PDM servers, then the client.
Each workstation connects to the vault through a local view, a folder that displays the vault content.
Tip
Do the first installation on a test machine and write down every server name, service account and folder you choose: you will need them for production.
3. Do the exercise
On a test virtual machine:
- install SQL Server Express and SQL Server Management Studio
- install the database server, the archive server and the CAD Editor client
- create a test vault and its local view
