Prerequisite: Lesson 6

1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

Validate the PDM VaultVideo 1▶Validate the PDM VaultAdd and share files and folders, version a part and move it to the released state.↗ Users, Groups and PermissionsVideo 2▶Users, Groups and PermissionsAdd users, create groups and assign permissions at group level.↗ PDM Vault BackupVideo 3▶PDM Vault BackupBack up the SQL databases, the archive server credentials and the file archives.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

Validate a new vault with everyday operations: adding files, a new version, moving through the workflow to the released state.

2

Assign permissions to groups rather than to users: a newcomer inherits the rights by joining the group.

3

A full backup has three parts: the vault SQL databases, the archive server settings and the file archives.

4

Backing up only the SQL database or only the files leaves part of the vault without a copy.

Tip

Schedule the SQL backup and the archive copy at the same time: two backups several hours apart may no longer match.

3. Do the exercise

On the test vault from lesson 6:

  • create two groups (Design, Read-only) and one user in each
  • add a part, check in a second version and move it to the released state
  • back up the SQL database, the archive server settings and the archives folder
✓To check: The user in the Read-only group cannot check out the part, and the three backup items are in your backup folder.
