Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

Transient Dynamic SimulationVideo 1▶Transient Dynamic SimulationShock by base excitation, mesh optimized for dynamics and structural damping.↗ Harmonic AnalysisVideo 2▶Harmonic AnalysisDefine a load in the frequency domain and use the results of the harmonic study.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

The transient study gives the response over time, for example to a shock applied through the base (base excitation).

2

Damping directly governs the amplitude of the response: without it, dynamic results are meaningless.

3

The harmonic study defines the load in the frequency domain and gives the response at each excitation frequency.

4

In dynamics, the mesh is sized first to represent the relevant modes of the structure correctly.

Tip

Record the damping value you used and its source in your report: it is the first question a reviewer will ask about a dynamic analysis.

3. Do the exercise

On a piece of equipment mounted on a frame:

  • calculate the natural frequencies and check the mass participation
  • apply a base shock in a transient study with a defined damping
  • create a harmonic study over a frequency range around the first mode
✓To check: The harmonic response shows a peak at the frequency of the first mode calculated in the frequency study.
