Surfaces · Lesson 2: Lofts and sweeps

1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

2. Key takeaways

1

A loft connects profiles; add guide curves when the shape between the profiles must be controlled.

2

Start and end constraints (normal to profile, tangency) set how the shape starts and ends.

3

Connectors fix a twisted loft by linking the right vertices between profiles.

4

For a sweep, sketch the path and guides before the profile, then connect them with pierce relations.

Tip

If a sweep fails, check the path first: a radius smaller than half the profile or a break in tangency is enough to block the feature.

3. Do the exercise

Model a mug handle:

  • an arc path sketched on the Right Plane
  • an elliptical profile perpendicular to the path
  • a sweep, then a loft between two different sections to compare
✓To check: Change the arc dimension: the sweep rebuilds without errors and the profile stays perpendicular.
