1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

2. Key takeaways

1

The typical method: create surfaces larger than needed, then trim them against each other.

2

Trim Surface cuts with a sketch or another surface; Extend Surface lengthens an edge that is too short.

3

Knit Surface joins the faces into a single body and can create a solid directly if the set is closed.

4

Thicken turns the final surface into a thin-walled part, on one side or both.

Tip

Name your surface bodies in the Surface Bodies folder: on a model with 30 surfaces, that is what lets you find your way around six months later.

3. Do the exercise

Model a simplified mouse shell:

  • an extruded surface for the curved top
  • an extruded surface for the outline seen from above
  • trim them against each other, knit, then thicken to 2 mm
✓To check: The Solid Bodies folder contains a single body, and the part check reports no errors.
