1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

Repairing Imported GeometryVideo 1▶Repairing Imported GeometryFind defects, heal faces with Import Diagnostics, rebuild holes.↗ Editing Imported GeometryVideo 2▶Editing Imported GeometryDelete a face or a hole, or untrim a surface, on a part with no history.↗ Untrim SurfacesVideo 3▶Untrim SurfacesExtend a surface along its natural boundaries to close a hole or a sharp corner.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

Run Import Diagnostics as soon as you open the file: it often repairs faces and gaps between faces on its own.

2

What remains is handled manually: delete the faulty face, then patch it with a Filled Surface and knit.

3

Delete Hole and Untrim Surface remove a hole or a cutout without affecting the rest.

4

Check the part (Check tool) before any edit: you know what was broken from the start.

Tip

Before repairing a customer file, ask them for another export format (Parasolid rather than IGES): it is often faster than repairing.

3. Do the exercise

Open a STEP file supplied by a customer or supplier:

  • run Import Diagnostics and note the defects
  • delete an unnecessary hole
  • patch a missing face and knit into a solid
✓To check: The part is a single solid, and Check no longer reports invalid faces or edges.
