Sheet Metal · Lesson 2: Creating flanges and bends
Edge flange, miter flange, hems, sketched bends and jogs: the everyday features.
Lesson goal
Build a complete bent sheet metal part from a base flange: flanges, hems, sketched bends and jogs.

1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Edge FlangeAdd a flange on one or more edges, and set its length, angle and flange position.↗
Video 2▶Miter FlangeRun a sketched profile along several edges, with the miter cut handled at the corners.↗
Video 3▶Hems in Sheet MetalFold the edge of a sheet back onto itself: closed, open, tear drop or rolled.↗
Video 4▶Sketched BendsBend a sheet along a sketch line, without adding material.↗
Video 5▶Jog and MirrorCreate two close bends in a single feature, and mirror sheet metal features.↗
2. Key takeaways
Everything starts from the Base Flange: thickness, bend radius and K-Factor are defined there once, then used by every feature of the part.
A flange on one edge: Edge Flange. One profile running along several edges: Miter Flange.
The flange position (Material Inside, Material Outside, Bend Outside) changes the final dimension. Choose it based on how the drawing is dimensioned.
A Hem removes a sharp edge and stiffens the sheet. A Jog creates a step in a single feature.
Check the flat pattern as you build: a problem caught early is fixed in one feature.
Tip
Set the radius and K-Factor in the base flange, or better in a bend table, rather than feature by feature. If the sheet changes, there is only one place to edit.
3. Do the exercise
Model a U-shaped cover in 1.5 mm steel sheet:
- 200 × 100 mm base, two 40 mm flanges at 90°
- a closed hem on the front edge
- a 10 mm jog on the back face
