1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

Generating a Bill of CharacteristicsVideo 1▶Generating a Bill of CharacteristicsExtract annotations manually or automatically, from the add-in or the standalone application.↗ Extracting Notes, Dimensions, and GD&T Control FramesVideo 2▶Extracting Notes, Dimensions, and GD&T Control FramesRead a 2D drawing with optical character recognition (OCR) and classify each characteristic.↗ Working with TolerancesVideo 3▶Working with TolerancesEdit a tolerance and set default tolerances for untoleranced dimensions.↗ Extracting and Changing QuantitiesVideo 4▶Extracting and Changing QuantitiesIdentify repeated dimensions (4x) and list them separately if each instance must be inspected.↗

2. Key takeaways

1

The Bill of Characteristics is the core of the project: each line becomes a balloon and a line in the report.

2

OCR reads the dimensions on a scanned or PDF drawing: always check the extracted values, especially GD&T symbols.

3

Default tolerances take the general tolerance table from the title block: without them, a plain dimension has no inspection limit.

4

A dimension marked 4x can stay a single line or be split into four: decide based on what the shop actually measures.

Tip

Flag key characteristics (functional or requested by the customer) during extraction: they then stand out in the report and the inspector knows where to focus.

3. Do the exercise

On the project from lesson 1:

  • extract all the dimensions and notes from the first sheet
  • set the default tolerances from the drawing's title block
  • split a repeated dimension into separate characteristics
✓To check: Every dimension on the drawing has its line, no line has an empty tolerance and the number of lines matches the number of measurements to take.
