1. Watch the videos

Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.

2. Key takeaways

1

A derived view is based on an existing view: projected, auxiliary (perpendicular to an edge), detail (enlarged area).

2

A section view shows the inside: simple section, aligned section for revolved parts, half section for symmetric parts.

3

A break view shortens a long part without distorting the dimensions.

4

To add a sketch to a specific view, lock the view focus: the sketch stays attached to it.

Tip

Exclude from the section the elements that should not be hatched (screws, shafts, ribs): the drawing becomes much more readable.

3. Do the exercise

On the drawing from lesson 1:

  • add a section view through a hole
  • add a 2:1 scale detail view on a thin area
  • if the part is long, shorten a view with a break
✓To check: Dimensions taken on the break view still show the true length.
