Drawings · Lesson 3: Dimensions and annotations
Dimensions, geometric tolerances, notes, blocks and notes linked to dimensions and properties.
Lesson goal
Complete a drawing with the dimensions, tolerances and annotations the shop expects, and link text to the model.

Prerequisite: Lessons 1 and 2
1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Detailing: DimensionsImport model dimensions, create driven dimensions and move them between views.↗
Video 2▶Annotations and Drawing BlocksNotes, geometric tolerances, symbols and reusable blocks.↗
Video 3▶Parametric NotesLink a note to a dimension or a property: the text follows the model.↗
2. Key takeaways
A model dimension drives the part, a driven dimension (added on the drawing) only measures it.
Geometric tolerances attach to a face or a dimension; datums (A, B, C) are placed with the datum feature symbol.
A block saves a set of annotations (logo, in-house symbol) that you can reuse on all your drawings.
A parametric note displays a dimension or a property: it updates by itself.
Tip
Save the notes you type often (general tolerances, surface finish) in the Design Library: a drag and drop is then enough.
3. Do the exercise
On your part drawing:
- add a position tolerance on a hole, referenced to two datums
- create a note that displays the part material from its properties
- save your logo as a block
