Video 2▶Metal PlasticityBilinear von Mises plasticity model, effect of mesh quality and reading results over time.↗
2. Key takeaways
Force control imposes the load; it can become unstable when the structure loses stiffness.
Displacement control imposes a displacement and often succeeds where force control fails, provided you adapt the boundary conditions.
A stress beyond the yield strength in a linear study has no physical meaning: it is the signal to use a plasticity model.
The bilinear von Mises model describes the material with two slopes: elastic, then strain hardening.
Tip
In a yielded area, mesh quality directly affects the calculated stress: refine the critical area before drawing conclusions.
3. Do the exercise
On a steel bracket that exceeds the yield strength in linear static analysis:
- note the maximum stress of the linear study
- create a nonlinear study with a bilinear von Mises material
- compare stresses and displacements at several points of the time curve
