Piping · Lesson 2: Create a piping route
Auto Route, manual routing in a 3D sketch and routing along geometry with coverings.
Lesson goal
Connect two pieces of equipment with a piping route, automatically when possible and manually when necessary.

1. Watch the videos
Dassault Systèmes videos hosted on MySolidWorks: they open in a new tab and a free account is enough. Watch them in order.
Video 1▶Auto-RoutingDrag in flanges, create a route and compare several solutions proposed automatically.↗
Video 2▶Routing: Manual 3D SketchBuild the route by hand with angle guides, lines, elbows and merging when automatic routing is not enough.↗
Video 3▶Routing Along GeometryRoute relative to an existing surface, dimension to the centerline or the wall, add coverings.↗
2. Key takeaways
Auto Route proposes several solutions between two connections; compare them before choosing one.
You can ask the route to avoid the model geometry or to pass through reference geometry.
When automatic routing gives nothing usable, manual routing in a 3D sketch remains the solution: lines, angle guides, elbows.
A pipe's dimensions can refer to its centerline or its outer surface, and a covering (insulation, for example) can be added to the pipe.
Tip
Start with Auto Route even if you plan to touch it up: a route close to the right one is faster to correct than to draw.
3. Do the exercise
In an assembly with two pieces of equipment fitted with flanges:
- connect them with Auto Route and compare at least two solutions
- make the same connection by hand in a 3D sketch with two elbows
- add a covering on a section of the pipe
